How to create your own candle spell for any occasion
As a practicing witch, I’ve dabbled in a lot of different things within the magical and metaphysical realm, and out of everything I have done, candle spells are the one thing that continues to be my favorite. Maybe it’s because I’m a Leo but lighting things on fire and watching them burn while you focus on your intention is my favorite way to practice magic.
If you’ve seen my content, you’ve probably seen or heard of my shop where I used to sell candles for candle spells. While I don’t sell them at the moment, I really love candle magic and I love sharing so I figured, why not share my base candle spell with you all. This spell is the foundation of all the spell candles that I create and is the formula I use in just about every spell. If you’ve been wondering how to create your own candle spell and how to find the correct ingredients, then this post is for you!
Figure out your intention
First things first, you have to figure out your intention. Why are doing a candle spell? Are you in need of more money or perhaps you are going through a stressful period in your life and you need some peace or healing. Whatever your need is, boil it down to one word (prosperity, love, peace, healing, protection, etc.). This word will be your overall intention and will help you find the proper corresponding tools for your spell.
Find your correspondences
Now that you know what your intention is, this is where you have to do a little research into what herbs, crystals, colors, etc. will align with this intention. This is where I like to pull out my handy Llewelyn’s big book of correspondences. If you have the book or can purchase it, this book is wonderful in allowing you to find just about every emotion, herb, animal, and astrological sign you can think of.
I prefer to search for the specific word that I’ve already picked out (health, prosperity, peace, love, etc.) and find it in the first chapter, Issues, Intentions, and Powers. This is where you will see all the herbs, minerals, deities, and many other correspondences associated with your intention!
Now, this book is a doozy in both price and content so I completely understand that it might not be accessible for everyone. But have no fear, there are so many great resources that are available online to help you narrow down what to gather. One great resource is the Correspondence Table + Chart from spell8! Otherwise, you can always go to Google and search ”[intention] magic correspondences“ and peruse the results.
Once you’ve found your resources for correspondence, now it’s time to pick out a few things that you will use in your spell candle. Personally, I love picking out a couple of herbs, a mineral/crystal, and a color. So for example, when creating a prosperity candle, I would choose:
Bay leaves
Ginger
Clove
Sage
Aventurine
Green
And you can get creative with this, feel free to use tarot cards. times of the week, sigils, etc when gathering your “ingredients” and crafting your spell. The whole point of this is to create something that is tailored to you and what resonates the most!
When you choose items and ingredients that speak the loudest to you, your spell will be even stronger because it’s YOUR intention going into it! Just remember, don’t overthink it! Choose what feels right to you when crafting your spell. The process of choosing correspondences is just a way to jump-start the magical and creative process!
Assemble your candle spell
Now that you’ve got your herbs, crystals, oils, etc., it’s time to grab your candle. I always try to use a candle that has a color that corresponds with my intention but if you don’t have access to a lot of color candles, using a white one is just fine! Depending on the type of candle that you use will be key to how you prepare and dress your candle. Here are my preferred ways to prepare each type of candle:
Taper, chime, and pillar
To do a candle spell with a taper, chime, or pillar candle you must first need a holder for the candle. Because these types of candles aren’t being held in a container, a holder will help with any fallout or melting wax from your spell! If all else fails and you can’t find a proper candle holder, just use a fire-safe dish and prop your candle up by melting the bottom a bit and placing it up on the fire-safe dish. You’ll need to be extra careful as it will be delicate but it should work in a pinch! To assemble your spell with a taper, chime, or pillar candle:
- Take a needle or something thin and crave the name of your intention (or a sigil) into the side of your candle. be careful not to be heavy-handed, we don’t want to break the candle, we just want enough to see the carving!
- Once you’ve scratched your intention into the side of the candle, then you’ll take a carrier oil and lightly coat the sides of the candle.
- With your candle all oiled up, now you can sprinkle your herbs of choice all over the candle so it sticks to the sides. Make sure your candle is propped up, in a fire safe dish, and away from all fire hazards.
Tealight
I love a good tealight, these candles are small but mighty and are great to use when you don’t want to wait several hours while your taper or chime candle burns out. They are also budget-friendly and don’t take up much product or space when using them in spells! To assemble your spell with a tealight candle:
- When dressing your tealight, my favorite way to do it is by scratching my word or sigil into the top of the candle with a needle.
- Use your finger and swipe some oil onto the top of your tealight candle and then take your herbs and sprinkle a tiny bit onto the top of it.
- Make sure your candle is in a fire safe dish and away from all fire hazards.
Glass jar candle
This is probably the most common candle that you’ll have on hand whether it’s from Target or Bath & Body Works you’re most likely going to have some kind of glass jarred candle lying around your space. To assemble your spell with a glass jar candle:
- Lightly scrape the name of your intention (or your sigil) into the top of the candle, being careful not to harm the wick. Alternatively, you could always take a sharpie and write your intention or sigil onto the outside of the glass container!
- Once you have your intention written onto the candle, this is where you can put a few drops of carrier oil around the top of your candle wax (being careful not to get the wick oily)
- Then sprinkle in your dried herbs + crystals onto the top of it. If you don’t want your crystals to melt into the wax, you can always just place your crystals/minerals around the jar of your candle.
- Make sure your candle is in a fire safe dish and away from all fire hazards.
No matter what candle you use, at this point, your candle is all done and ready to be lit! Now it might be redundant to state but I will say it anyway: PLEASE PRACTICE PROPER CAUTION WHEN LIGHTING YOUR CANDLES! Because your spells include burning wax, oil, and dried herbs, if your candle isn’t closely monitored or is left unattended, this can lead to serious fire accidents and we don’t want that. Smart witches prevent house fires, remember that!
Tip: if you need candles but don’t want to break the bank, any local dollar store is a great place to stock up on candles and even herbs for your spell!
Carry out your candle spell
Now that your candle is all properly dressed, it’s time to light it! The entire process of doing a candle spell is really up to the individual and how they choose to practice but one of the ways I like to carry out my candle spells is to take a scrap of paper and write down the details of my intention.
Then I will fold it up three times (fold it towards you to welcome in or fold it away from you to remove something from your life). Once my paper has been folded I will either stick it near/under my candle while it burns or I will use the fire from my candle and burn the note, spreading its ashes around the candle.
There are no right or wrongs here, just do what feels right and what makes sense for you and your practice!
And there you have it, my friends!
A simple and foolproof way to create, assemble, and cast your own candle spell no matter what your intention is! I hope this spell foundation serves you well and helps bring you many magical opportunities.
